Hi ,

Translating synthetic biology from the lab to commercial production is a significant challenge. After all, synbio needs to reach an industrial scale to have significant impacts. There are many hurdles to overcome in scaling synbio, from fermentation capacity and cost to supply chain innovations, access to key feedstocks, and bioreactor efficiency and design. However, new technologies and techniques are emerging to solve these challenges and take the bioeconomy to the next level.

This week’s newsletter is brought to you by Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, a company dedicated to advancing and optimizing the laboratory and to serving a spectrum of industries. Product areas include centrifugation, lab automation and liquid handling, particle counting and characterization, cell counting and analysis, flow cytometry, TOC analysis and more.

We have compiled a list of everything you need to know about biomanufacturing scale-up and the significant developments in the last months. Continue the discussion at SynBioBeta 2023: The Global Synthetic Biology Conference May 23 - 25, and the track dedicated to this topic.

  • Colorifix gets a boost via a $22.6 million Series B round: Led by Swedishfashion giant H&M. Colorifix stands out for its progress in using microbes (such as E. coli) to deposit dyes directly onto fabrics naturally. Its microorganisms are engineered to produce specific colors and then cultivated in giant vats.

Orr Yarkoni, CEO of Colorifix, will be speaking at SynBioBeta on May 23 at 9:30am.

  • Pow.bio has developed a first-of-its-kind fermentation technology that solves the capacity problem. By utilizing existing fermentation infrastructure, Pow.bio can increase capacity—now—by 10-30 fold. This is an order-of-magnitude step-change for the synbio industry, redefining the limits of biomanufacturing. So how does Pow.bio do this? According to the company, the key is its continuous production methods. By keeping microbes in an ultra-productive state, continuous fermentation increases capacity and solves for speed, cost, and scale. Hear more at SynBioBeta 2023 with Ouwei Wang on May 25.
