Funding News

• Solugen raises $200M to make greener chemicals with synthetic biology: The company is on a mission to decarbonize the chemicals industry and is pulling in some significant capital along the way. It has raised $635.2 million to date, in addition to making $100 million in profits this year, and plans to expand further.
• Recursion announces $150M private placement: The AI-powered drug designer company is shifting focus to its oncology pipeline as a part of a strategic rethink powered by investment from a Swedish company Kinnevik.
• Indee Labs awarded $2M contract to scale up and out hydropore for cell therapy: Indee Labs announces a $2M contract with the National Cancer Institute to scale up and out the Hydropore platform for cell therapy with Eyquem Lab at UCSF.
• Time BioVentures launches unconventional new biotech fund: Backed by an A-List roster of biotech luminaries, like the former rockstar D.A. Wallach and serial drug developer Tim Wright, the VC firm has wrapped up its first fund with $100 million in investments to fund "game-changing innovations in healthcare".

• How to spend $2 billion: The recent Executive Order will inject $2 billion into the US bioeconomy by bolstering US capacity in high-value, high-tech goods made from biological resources, such as alternative proteins, sustainable farming inputs, and pharmaceutical biotech. Karl Schmieder asks his network to brainstorm how they would spend the money to make the biggest impact.

New Products

• Checkerspot is bringing sustainable materials to the masses with their Pollinator™ Kit: The company just launched a DIY polyurethane casting kit to showcase its algae-based resins. The resin, pigment, mixing stick, and even the ink used to print the packaging are all algae-derived and designed to inspire people to give biobased materials a try.

• Twist Bioscience promotes Patrick Finn to President and Chief Operating Officer. Patrick joined Twist in 2015 to help launch its commercial synthetic DNA products and is now stepping up to lead the company into new areas of growth, such as DNA data storage and drug discovery. • Provectus Algae strengthens R&D team: Provectus announced that it has appointed biotech stalwart Guillaume Barbier as its Vice President of Research and Development.
• Calyxt joins Bioindustrial Manufacturing and Design Ecosystem (BioMADE), a Department of Defense initiative, to advance sustainable plant-based biomanufacturing.

Plant news

• Synthetic genetic circuits reprogram plant roots: The study demonstrates that it is now possible to program gene expression across plant cell types using genetic circuits, providing a roadmap to engineer more resilient bioenergy crops.
• Neoplants hopes to curb indoor air pollution with bioengineered house plants: Their first product is a houseplant designed to fight air pollution by capturing and recycling volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
• Solar Foods protein ‘made from air’ gets novel food nod in Singapore: Solar Foods’ protein grown with CO2 and electricity has received regulatory approval from the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Commercial launch is planned for 2024.
