Hi ,

This week, we have a lot of exciting funding news. Food tech companies like Hoxton Farms and Nourish Ingredients are making plant-based foods more flavorful by adding fat to the recipe. Bolt Threads is partnering with Ginkgo to improve the efficiency of mycelium-based leather production and Prime Medicine has a successful IPO debut.

SynBioBeta is only 7 months away and we are continuing to grow the lineup of amazing speakers - check them out and make sure to REGISTER before Monday as our October early bird ends at midnight on Halloween!

Funding News

  • Last Thursday was a good opening day for Prime Medicine, a gene editing company founded by Harvard biochemist David Liu that has raised $175 million in its IPO. The shares started trading nearly 12% above the IPO price, reaching a valuation of about $1.8 billion on their first day on the Nasdaq.

  • Hoxton Farms gets a fat check: The London-based company raised $22 million to build a pilot plant producing animal fat from stem cells. The company aims to improve the taste of plant-based products as the trend for less carbon-intensive foods continues to grow. Max Jamilly joined us for the SynBioBeta European Thought Leader Retreat in London in July, congratulations to him and the team!

  • Another food tech company going after flavor, Nourish Ingredients, just secured $28.6 million in Series A funding to produce animal-free fats using synthetic biology. The Australian startup expects to debut their first ingredient in alternative protein product lines and specialty foods in 2023.
  • Bolt Threads is partnering with Ginkgo Bioworks for a multi-project collaboration that includes optimizing the production efficiency of Mylo™ – a sustainable, low-footptint leather alternative made from mycelium – to make it more affordable for consumers and brands alike. Companies like adidas, Stella McCartney, GANNI, and lululemon are already featuring products made with Mylo.
  • Last week, I went to a wonderful event hosted by Lindy Fishburne and the team at Breakout Ventures, and I met Alexander Schubert, Co-Founder and Partner of SciFounders, a mentorship program for idea-stage founders with a $400,000 investment. You can meet Alexander and Lindy at SynBioBeta next year, click here to learn more.
