Hi ,

Please pardon the click-bait subject line -- we simply wanted to draw attention to the exciting new "Spotlight" articles we’re adding to the Built With Biology Digest.

Going forward, we at SynBioBeta plan to highlight three companies each week… all game-changing innovators using biology to make the world a better place. This week, we focus on Biomason’s CO2-absorbing cement, Wild Earth’s plant-based dog food, and Paradise Packaging’s ingenious use of mushrooms to displace styrofoam.

As an added bonus, we’ve reposted an insightful report from industry analyst Mark Bünger on the record-breaking $4.2B in venture funding secured by SynBio start-ups in Q2, 2021. To view/download the report, please click on the Bioeconomy Q2 2021 Report image below.

We hope you enjoy this week’s Digest. As always, thank you for reading!

Spotlight: Biomason

Did you know cement production is responsible for 8% of the world's annual greenhouse gas emissions? As the most manufactured material in the world, cement is quite literally the foundation of modern civilization. But what if cement could capture carbon instead of release it? Meet Biomason, the company producing stronger and more sustainable biocemement using bacteria. The company aims to eliminate 25% of global cement production CO2 emissions by 2030, a big step towards mitigating climate change! Check out Biomason's website and Twitter!

Spotlight: Wild Earth

Did you know that 25-30% of meat production in the US goes directly into pet food? Not only does livestock farming release tons of greenhouse gasses, but the meat in cat and dog food is often tainted with melted plastic and toxic chemicals. Wild Earth, a biotech company, is producing healthier and more sustainable plant-based food for dogs (who are actually omnivores!) and is developing cell-based meat for cats. Sustainable food for humans is good. Sustainable food for the whole family? Much better! Check out Wild Earth's website and Twitter.

Spotlight: Paradise Packaging Company

Plastic packaging has reached a breaking point and we desperately need new, sustainable solutions. Meet Paradise Packaging, a company manufacturing fully compostable biocomposite from hemp and mycelium, the root-like structures of fungi. This biocomposite grows into any shape in less than a week and, once dried, becomes waterproof, insulating, and fire resistant. As survivors of the devastating 2018 Camp Fire, Paradise Packaging is rebuilding their community through jobs and innovation. The company is expanding quickly and aims to displace 500 tons of styrofoam and plastic packaging per year! Learn more about Paradise Packaging here!
