A brighter future… built with biology
Hi ,

We’re five weeks away from SynBioBeta, live in Oakland! This week, we share our COVID safety protocols, launch our AI-driven 1-1 networking app, and preview some of the sessions we can’t wait to share with you in person!

Thank you to this week’s sponsor, Twist Bioscience, a leading and rapidly growing synthetic biology and genomics company that has developed a disruptive DNA synthesis platform to industrialize the engineering of biology. Check out this app note which showcases the use of Twist Gene Fragments for engineering Baker’s yeast to synthesize plant alkaloids.

We are Still a Go for Our Live Event and Safety is Our #1 Priority!

After so long apart, it can be hard to remember how energizing and uplifting it is to be in the same room.

We’re keenly aware of the fluctuating COVID situation and are monitoring it daily in consultation with industry experts. If something changes, we will pivot with the science. Here’s our protocol to keep us all safe:

  • Bring your proof of vaccination
  • Get your PCR test three days before the event
  • Bring your mask swag
  • Use common sense - if you don’t feel well, we’ll miss you but we must always put the safety of the community first, social-responsibility style :)

Step one: COVID safety. Step two: Solve global challenges with biology!

Our community is growing so fast, we need to accelerate our connections with customers, talent, media awareness, and investors focused on making our planet a better place.
To serve our community best, we’re extending our early bird deadline until Sept 17th.
Get Excited! Here Are Sessions You Don’t Want to Miss:
Hear from our panel of distinguished founders and investors on their journey starting or investing in synthetic bio. The synthetic biology ecosystem has slowly evolved to include more women, but still women are underrepresented as founders, investors and board members. The panel will share how they successfully achieved their goals, and what they learned along the way.

The challenge of decarbonizing our food system can seem overwhelming. Until recently, plants had been the staple for making alternative proteins. But novel technologies and ingredients are opening up new possibilities for sustainable, global nutrition. What does the future of food look—and taste—like when we aren’t limited by only what animals and plants we can domesticate?

It’s clear that building a more sustainable world requires significant capital and long-term investor support. How can high-profile investors lead the way in ethical funding and a globally united investment strategy?
Race Against the Clock: The Industry’s Biggest Welcome Party!
In a SynBioBeta first, we are dedicating the third day of our live event (Oct. 6th) to welcoming the next generation of students and startups to the bioeconomy! We all know there are a lot of problems to solve in our world. Thanks to our friends at Ginkgo Bioworks, Race Against the Clock will break down early barriers for students and startups, open doors to key connections, and accelerate what we can build with biology.  If you’re a student or startup who hasn’t signed up yet, be sure to fill out all your details here!
SynBioBeta is Going to Be Busy Busy Busy so Set Your Meetings Today!

As we strive to make our everyday products sustainable, what do we do about our favorite scents? Fragrance molecules are typically made with petrochemicals. But now, a team from Conagen and Blue California is making sustainable fragrances with microbes.

How are these fragrance molecules made? How are scents designed by perfumers? Can biomanufactured perfumes aid animal welfare? Tune in to get all your questions answered!

SynBio in the News:
Metabolic engineers have a problem: cells are selfish. The scientists want to use microbes to produce chemicals. The microbes prefer to concentrate on their own growth. Kristala Jones Prather has devised a tool that satisfies both conflicting objectives.
Vertex is making a $1.2 billion edit to its CRISPR work through a new research collaboration with Arbor Biotechnologies to develop novel ex vivo engineered cell therapies.
Can you spot the fake receptor? The coronavirus can’t either.
As researchers search for new ways to treat covid-19, some scientists are making decoy receptors to lure the virus away from our cells.

Have a great week,
Regards,
