The Unexplored Power of Microbes
There are billions of microbes on Earth but right now, synthetic biology is only utilizing a select few. What unexplored microbe could transform the future of bioengineeering? "A lot of synthetic biology has been centered around the bread and butter E. colisaccharomyces… but there are millions of [microbial] species that haven’t been tackled," says Kevin Solomon, P.h.D, assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering at Purdue University.

New Synthetic Biology Venture Fund Puts "Scientist Founders" First
Synthetic biology investment set a nearly $8 billion record in 2020. The trend of increased biotech venture capital continues in 2021 with the newly announced fund NFX Bio. The firm will be led by Dr. Omri Amirav Drory, Dr. Emily Leproust, James Currier and Gigi Levy-Weiss.

SynBioBeta Podcast

How do we start to harness nature’s design principles and manufacturing capabilities to design new materials from the atomic level up? In our latest episode, I spoke with Massimo Portincaso about the impacts of co-designing with nature. Read BCG’s report on the bio-industrial revolution.

In case you missed it…

Last week, SynBioBeta released a record report on the stunning level of synthetic biology investment in 2020 - nearly $8 billion flowed into synthetic biology last year, more than double the investment levels of 2019. Check out our report and see what macro trends are driving the synthetic biology industry into 2021

In other news, the largest firefighters union, IFAA, have recently put a stake in the ground against PFAs in their firefighting attire and accepting money from chemical companies. W.F. Gore is one of the leading makers and contributors to the firefighters' gear, and synthetic biology company Checkerspot is working with them to create a PFAS free solution.
